Austrian composer Thomas Larcher’s new album features premiere recordings of three strongly contrasting works. The Times has hailed Larcher’s music as a world “of haunting landscapes and dreams, stylistically disparate but fused by the composer’s astonishing ear and quizzical attitude to traditional forms”, a description borne out by the compositions here. The Living Mountain, for soprano and ensemble, draws upon the memoir of the Scottish poet and nature writer Nan Shepherd.

Alice Sara Ott presents a new deluxe version of the successful Echoes of Life album, set for release on 27 October. Among the 11 newly recorded tracks complementing the original album are the famous Bach Prelude in C Major both on a grand piano and a specifically prepared upright piano, as well as Silvestrov’s Distant Music, Chopin Preludes and a new composition by Alice’s friend Chilly Gonzales. The album is now available for pre-order alongside the second pre-release track ‘Silvestrov: Distant Music’.

Azimuth, the trio of pianist John Taylor, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and singer Norma Winstone, already sounded like a fully-fledged ensemble when this, the group’s first album was released in 1977. Expanding and roaming beyond the spectrum the vocal jazz genre was usually limited to, Azimuth proved of a progressive spirit from the start. Upon the debut’s release, Melody Maker remarked that “this album may (…) be the first sign of [John Taylor’s] evolution into a genuinely important composer: behind its graceful flowing beauty lies a spirit of inquiry which will surely lead further.”

Moondog is the fifth album by American composer Moondog. Moondog had released no music for twelve years since his 1957 album The Story of Moondog. Finally, in 1969, producer James William Guercio invited him to record an album for Columbia Records.

Wolfgang Muthspiel and his trio with Scott Colley on bass and Brian Blade on drums reaches a new creative peak on Dance of the Elders – the group’s follow-up up to the much lauded Angular Blues, which The Times called a “quietly impressive album”. Here Wolfgang’s successful stride continues, with his unique compositional signature on the one hand and the particularly vibrant interchanges with his trio colleagues on the other. The guitarist’s writing and approach to jazz is heavily folk-induced but equally inspired by classical music – both aspects are presented clearly throughout the album. Brian’s floating percussive injections and Scott’s nimble counterpoint on bass complement Wolfgang’s acoustic and electric playing in fluid interplay over intricate polyrhythms and adventurous harmonic landscapes.

Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band is releasing their first studio recording since the 2017’s Body And Shadow. KINGS HIGHWAY, the bands seventh record, unites drummer Brian Blade with pianist Jon Cowherd, bassist Christopher Thomas, saxophonists Myron Walden and Melvin Butler and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel. Kings Highway features two cuts that have been the centerpiece of many of the bands live performances (the title track Kings Highway and Migration). The Fellowship create a sound of its own genre, encompassing jazz, gospel and folk music that continues to uplift and inspire listeners worldwide.

Bobby Hutcherson (January 27, 1941 - August 15, 2016) has been an endless source of inspiration for Brian Blade and the LIFECYCLES band members. In honor of Bobby, LIFECYCLES has chosen to record his NOW! album in its entirety, two songs from Bobby’s collaborative history with Jackie McLean and Grachan Moncur III and five original compositions by this stunning septet.

The recording of this historic concert is presented in its entirety for the first time in this edition. The remastered original tapes have been used to produce this CD, ensuring excellent sound quality.

The music of Bach has always been a specialty of the Choir of King’s College, who dedicated their first ever recording to him in 1929 for HMV. Part of our retrospective dedicated to the pianist and benedictine monk Thierry de Brunhoff. All the recordings made for Pathé during his very brief career have been put online for the very first time. His discretion, his infinite ease with the piano, his deep understanding of the scores and his sudden decision to leave secular life have shrouded him in an aura of mystery, making him a veritable legend in piano circles. The unprecedented refinement he displays in this Schumann collection is one of the supreme testimonies to this incomparable talent, which we only wish he had graced us with for longer.

All this material is tackled by Başar and his bandmates Michelangelo Scandroglio and Bernardo Guerra with a truly surprising flair: these are strongly purposeful performances that immediately impose their presence without getting lost in vain babble or idle turns waiting for serendipity.
