Kitty Kallen (born Katie Kallen; May 25, 1921 – January 7, 2016) was an American popular singer whose career spanned from the 1930s to the 1960s, to include the Swing era of the Big Band years, the post-WWII pop scene and the early years of rock 'n roll.

The six Cello Suites, BWV 1007–1012, are suites for unaccompanied cello by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750). They are some of the most frequently performed solo compositions ever written for cello. Bach most likely composed them during the period 1717–1723, when he served as Kapellmeister in Köthen. The title given on the cover of the Anna Magdalena Bach manuscript was Suites à Violoncello Solo senza Basso (Suites for cello solo without bass).

A few good sides make this a fair to middling LP and not one of their best overall.

For many decades, students of Domenico Scarlatti, including me, have been debating about the relationship between most of Scarlatti’s Sonatas and Flamenco dance. Silvia Rambaldi and Andreina Di Girolamo deserve our praise for presenting a practical demonstration that moves beyond the boundary of words, uniting dance and harpsichord performance, by means of the collaboration of the dancer Rita Marchesini, who is an expert on both Baroque and Flamenco dance.

Pharoah Sanders — Karma on SHM-SACD Japanese pressing features the high-fidelity SHM-SACD format (single layer). Cardboard sleeve packaging. Universal. 2025. Released in May of 1969, Karma was the famed tenor saxophonist's third Impulse! Records album and is now seen as a milestone of the Spiritual Jazz movement. A natural progression in the sonic exploration that Sanders, along with John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane, had spearheaded throughout the previous five years, the album features two tracks, the 32-minute-long "The Creator Has A Master Plan," and "Colors." Filling the entire A-Side of the LP, "Creator," co-composed by Sanders with vocalist Leon Thomas, is as close as Spiritual Jazz comes to having its own anthem. Meanwhile, the lone B-side track, "Colors," is no less transfixing. A jazz legend, Sanders died at age 81 on September 24, 2022.

From Tower Records Japan's website, the release schedule for their new series of Blue Note SACD reissues. There is no information provided about sources (master tapes vs. 24/192 files) or mastering engineers. Robert Vosgiens' DSD downloads of some of these albums became available this year at North American vendors, and many BN titles have been released in all-analogue transfers on BN Classic Vinyl and BN Tone Poet. I have the BN Classic Vinyl LP of "Out to Lunch!" remastered by Kevin Gray, and the Vosgiens DSD download. It would be useful to have more technical details about this new group of Tower Japan BN SACDs.

Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, born four years before her brother, Felix Mendelssohn, was an accomplished pianist and a prolific composer. When she died of a stroke, aged just forty-two, she left around 460 pieces of music, some 250 of which are songs. The difficulties of making a career in her own era (her supportive father would not allow her to publish or work as a ‘professional’ composer) have condemned much of her work to obscurity, a situation that is now rapidly being reversed as the number of concerts and recordings devoted to works by women composers increases.
