Tarquinio Merula belonged to a generation of Italian composers, all of whom were born around 1600, for whom the concertante style was no longer a new idiom but a preferred musical medium, one that had been acquired in childhood and which had become not only the dominant musical language of the time but which was also to spread across the whole of Europe. Tarquinio Merula was renowned as a violin and organ virtuoso and published a wide variety of instrumental music per la chiesa e la camera. Here InAlto explores Merula’s sacred works, including the famous lullaby Hor che è tempo di dormire. His works may seem simple at times, but are impressively innovative; whilst sacred in character, they are rooted in human emotion.

VDGG's second step on the mid-'70s comeback trail saw Peter Hammill attempting to meld the introspective and the cosmic throughout, though this did not stop him from taking a dead run at a grandiose concept or two – the consequences of immortality on the title track, and the grand fate of humanity on the epic "Childlike Faith in Childhood's End." The theme of humane cooperation informs the opening "Pilgrims," while "La Rossa" is an epic tale of desire fulfilled (a story that would be concluded on Hammill's solo album, Over). The true highlight, however, is the beautiful, pensive "My Room (Waiting for Wonderland)," with its echoes of imagination and loss. Hammill did not achieve such a level of painful beauty again until "This Side of the Looking Glass" on Over.

Following the tumultuous promotion cycle for 2024's Ohio Players, the Black Keys wasted no time dwelling on the past and forged ahead with their 13th album, No Rain, No Flowers. As the title implies, the duo have taken an optimistic view on events, and the music reflects that attitude, resulting in some of the catchier and more upbeat offerings in their discography. They recruited hitmakers Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves), Rick Nowels (Madonna, Lana Del Rey), and Scott Storch (Beyoncé, Dr. Dre) for the LP, but - unlike the strong stylistic influence exerted by Danger Mouse on El Camino and Turn Blue - Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney haven't suddenly recorded a pop/hip-hop album. Instead, they keep it close to their existing blues-rock sound, with the producers simply adding a little shine here and there…

Dio's rock-solid 2000 concept album Magica would have better fit the musical climate 15-25 years beforehand, but a good album is a good album. Ronnie James Dio's band's previous studio effort, 1996's Angry Machines, admirably addressed modern, non-traditional heavy metal topics. But the musically superior Magica is rooted in the dark, mystical themes he perfected on Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and early Dio albums. One important factor is the solid lineup, particularly the return of Craig Goldy, the best guitarist Dio's had in his band besides Vivian Campbell. Bassist Jimmy Bain and drummer Simon Wright also return. Dio seems inspired, and his vocals are more textured than usual. Magica is a detailed fantasy epic about the struggle between good and evil. Several elements are similar to J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved Lord of the Rings novels, which themselves rely on traditional literary archetypes such as heroes, villains, and mythic quests…

Bach’s harpsichord concertos are arrangements of earlier violin concertos led scholars to suspect that the remaining concertos were also adaptations of lost works for strings or winds, prompting several musicologists to attempt reconstructions. However, recent research has shown that they are more likely arrangements of earlier keyboard works. But what would Bach have done if he had to perform one of these pieces again and wished to showcase a different solo instrument? Ensemble Odyssee explores this question with three brand-new arrangements, presented alongside Bach’s own arrangement of his Fourth Brandenburg Concerto, each piece showcasing the virtuosity of the ensemble’s four core members.

Bob Dylan & Mark Knopfler / The Jokermen / 3CD Foldup Papercase / Scorpio Slow Train Coming sessions, Muscle Shoals, AL April 30 – May 11, 1979 This is a totally unique collection of a lot of songs performed by Bob Dylan and Mark Knopfler together. This collection is spanning from the early sessions for Slow train coming, the Infidels sessions, the concert in 1986 when Dylan joined Dire Straits to perform four of his own songs and also the concert a couple of days before that when Mark Knopfler joined Bob Dylan at a concert, backed by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Two B-sides from vinyl singles and some songs which are not too much different than the album versions but different mixes or some instrument fewer or something like that. The sound quality has been improved a lot because all songs have been remastered. If you are looking for a complete collection of all songs with Dylan and Knopfler, please check this recording: The complete Infidels sessions. This is not 100% of all Dylan & Knopfler sessions though. You need to get the official releases of Infidels and Slow train coming aswell! Nothing from these two records is to be found in this collection. This is the material that didn't find it's way to these two records. Taken from the silver pressed bootleg "The Jokermen".

All of Sviatoslav Richter’s concert appearances in Prague, from his 1950 Prague Spring performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor, to his 1993 performance of the Grieg concerto, were highlights of Prague’s musical life. Richter, however, enjoyed traveling to small cities, often playing on instruments whose quality would be simply unacceptable for many of today’s musical stars. His concerts were generally completely sold out and offered his listeners an extraordinary musical experience regardless of the venue or quality of the instrument. The ability to surpise his audiences again and again was an inborn part of his personality.

Singer Barbara Lea's second album is pretty definitive of her early years. Lea is joined by the great (but ill fated and largely forgotten) trumpeter Johnny Windhurst, Dick Cary on either piano or alto horn, sometimes pianist Richard Lowman, guitarist Al Casamenti, bassist Al Hall, and drummer Osie Johnson. Originally a dozen selections, the CD reissue adds an alternate take and an additional title. Lea remains true to the lyrics yet uplifts the material, while the rhythm section swings lightly. Among the many highlights are "Nobody Else but You," "I'm Comin' Virginia," "My Honey's Lovin' Arms," and "Baltimore Oriole." Delightful music by a singer who deserves to be celebrated.

Henry Cow's third album, originally released in 1975, found them expanded to an eight-piece ensemble after a guest session on another group's record. Henry Cow absorbed Slapp Happy into their lineup after appearing on Slapp Happy's Desperate Straights album. It was a tenuous relationship (lasting only long enough for this release, and with Slapp Happy crumbling after Dagmar Krause decided to stay on with Henry Cow), but one that produced some stunning results. Anthony Moore and Peter Blegvad's "War" has enormous proportion and power that would have been beyond the scope of a relatively quiet trio. The sheer ambition of this work is bracing. Intricately composed and arranged pieces, rife with lyrics that meld poetry with politics, give way to extended improvisations. While that had always been the Henry Cow recipe, it was never given such dramatic sweep. No one has ever, before or since, sounded like this incarnation of Henry Cow.
