One of the major bands of the rock & roll era, the Who straddled the gap separating art-pop and hard-rock, creating kinetic, exploratory music that expanded the lexicon of rock & roll. Arriving during the second wave of the British Invasion, the Who came out of the UK's R&B-besotted Mod scene and married that groove to the crunching power chords pioneered by the Kinks. After their debut single "I Can't Explain" cracked the UK Top Ten in 1965, the band quickly gained a reputation for their volcanic live performances, which could escalate into Pete Townshend shattering his guitar while Keith Moon pushed over his drum kit.

In 1986, after almost 30 years on Columbia Records, Country music legend Johnny Cash released his first album on Mercury Records – Class Of ’55, in collaboration with fellow Sun Records alumni Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. Seven years later, his last recording before signing with Rick Rubin’s American Recordings would be another collaboration, “The Wanderer”, with U2.With brand new liner notes by music writer Scott Schinder, Johnny Cash: The Complete Mercury Studio Recordings (1986-1991) represents the very first deep dive into the Country music legend’s Mercury catalogue, and reveals its importance as the bridge between his better known catalogues on Columbia and American.

The recordings contained on "Chicago 1968" come from live performances and rehearsals during that year, and showcase the tracks that were to feature on their first Columbia album in 1969.

In the early 1970s San Diego was a sleepy Southern California Navy town on the Mexican border and a seemingly unlikely gathering point for some of the most innovative, unclassifiable American artists of their era. Yet the presence of Harry Partch - hobo composer, iconoclast and inventor of instruments such as the Harmonic Canon and Quadrangularis Reversum - and a newly established and highly experimental music department at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) ushered in a revolution that was as much social as it was musical. Drawing from the occult, self-realization and radical political movements of 70s Southern California, these artists sought to dismantle the established control systems of American life, looking to the future even as they sometimes referenced a distant, idyllically imagined past. In their pursuit of “Irrelevant Music” - Kenneth Gaburo’s term for an untainted music free of constraint and compromise - these disparate artists constitute a shadow history of American experimental music far removed from the European and East Coast models of the time. Sonic Meditations, compositional linguistics, microtonality, invented instruments, cutting edge electronics, underwater synthesizers, Tibetan throat singing, environmental sound and pure noise were their tools. My 2023 book, Alien Territory: Radical, Experimental and Irrelevant Music in 1970s San Diego, presents the story. In this collection are the sounds.

This new 2-LP compilation groups together all Marianne's non-album singles, B-sides and rarities released in the UK, alongside four previously unreleased recordings. The set has been remastered from the original tapes by the Grammy-nominated Andrew Batt who also provides detailed sleeve notes which Marianne contributed to before her passing in January 2025.

North Country Maid is the third studio album by British singer Marianne Faithfull. It was released only in the United Kingdom. The arrangements were by Jon Mark and Mick Taylor. Gus Dudgeon was the engineer and Gered Mankowitz was the photographer. The guitarists included Jon Mark and Big Jim Sullivan. Half of the songs had been released months earlier in the United States on the album Go Away from My World. Come My Way is the second studio album by English singer Marianne Faithfull. It was released simultaneously with her album Marianne Faithfull on 15 April 1965 by Decca Records. The double release was a result of different creative directions. While the record label pressed Faithfull to record a pop album, she wanted to record an album of folk songs. Even after the label suggested an album containing both genres, Faithfull decided to make two separate albums instead; Marianne Faithfull as the pop album and Come My Way as the folk album.

Love in a Mist (alternately titled Loveinamist) is the fourth studio album by British singer Marianne Faithfull, released in 1967. Michael Cooper is credited for the design and photography. Many of the tracks had been released in the US several months earlier on the US-only Faithfull Forever. This would be her last studio album release until 1977's Dreamin' My Dreams.

There have been quite a few different compilations of Gary Moore's albums; from very weak to mediocre, and maybe one or two better ones.This compilation is a selection of albums from the rock era (even though he hated it, and especially the hard rock/metal label that was stuck on it.) He thought he could find a way out of this by starting to play blues. Which I wouldn't recommend. It's a shame that the big labels (or the people working there) weren't able to put together such strong material.

TRIPLE CD SET FEATURING THE FINEST BROADCAST RECORDINGS AVAILABLE Ronnie Van Zant, Bob Burns, and Gary Rossington had been playing together since 1964 under various names, but in 1970 they became Lynyrd Skynyrd, and so began one of the most dynamic albeit tragic music careers in the annals of rock music. Crafting a distinctive southern sound through a creative blend of country, blues, and a British rock influence, the group became incredibly popular through the 1970s and it was only the tragic events of autumn 1977- that do not need repeating here - which stopped their onward march through the music biz.

Faithfull Forever is the third American studio album by British singer Marianne Faithfull. "Some Other Spring", "Lucky Girl" and "I'm the Sky" are unique to this album. The rest of the songs had been released as singles or would later be released on her next UK album Love in a Mist, although the version of "Counting" is a different mix from its European release, and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," with choral overdubs, differs significantly from the one on her previous UK album North Country Maid. Mike Leander was the arranger; Gus Dudgeon and Vic Smith were the engineers and Jean-Marie Perrier for the photography.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is the definitive hard-living, hard-driving Southern rock & roll band. Fusing the overdriven power of blues-rock, the kind of detailed storytelling skills often found in honky tonk country, the cocksure swagger of stadium rock, and a knack for pop hooks, they are equally adept at on-stage jamming and radio-ready singles like the quintessential AOR ballad "Free Bird." During the height of the band's popularity in the mid-'70s, they released a string of timeless classic rock standards including "Sweet Home Alabama," "Simple Man," "What's Your Name," "That Smell," and "Gimme Three Steps."

Lynyrd Skynyrd is definitely the southern rock band, mixing the saturated power of blues-rock with a rebellious southern image and hard rock arrogance. Skynyrd never relied on the jazzy improvisations of members of the Allman Brothers. They were more of a sharp, demanding rock & roll band – they could have done endless bullshit on stage and had that down-to-earth honesty more typical of country – but their music remains firmly rooted in blues, rock, and the deep south. The members of Skynyrd split up following a plane crash that killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and two other members, but they reunited ten years later, going on a string of popular tours.

Go Away from My World is the second American studio album by British singer Marianne Faithfull. Andrew Loog Oldham was the executive producer with David Bailey and Gered Mankowitz credited for the photography. Though the song "Come My Way" had been the title track of her second British album, the version on that album was from a different session and a considerably different performance than that included here.
