Sir John Barbirolli Among the leading conductors of the mid-20th century, John Barbirolli was acclaimed for his interpretations of Vaughan Williams, Mahler, and the late Romantics generally. He spent many years as conductor of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, building that group into a world-class ensemble.Barbirolli was born on December 2, 1899, in London. He was of Italian and French background and used the name Giovanni Barbirolli into young adulthood.

A remastered version of the Manchester band’s LP released on May 19, include rare and unreleased recordings. The reissue is the first in the new Chasing The Sun series from Big Brother Recordings, with Oasis‘s follow-up albums ‘What’s The Story (Morning Glory)?’ and ‘Be Here Now’ to also be reissued later this year.
The 20th anniversary edition of ‘Definitely Maybe‘ will be available as a standard CD, a three-disc Special Edition version including the rare recordings and demos, a 12″ vinyl LP featuring all the bonus CD content as a free download, and a Deluxe Box Set which features the LP and the CDs. Among the bonus content included in the reissue is a disc featuring the band’s stand-alone single ‘Whatever’, unheard acoustic versions of the tracks ‘Live Forever’ and ‘Shakermaker’ recorded in Paris, an early demo of ‘Half The World Away’ recorded in Noel Gallagher’s Tokyo hotel room, a demo of the extremely rare song ‘Strange Thing’ and a live recording of ‘Sad Song’ show at Manchester Academy

Rick Wakeman One of the premier rock keyboardists of the progressive era, Rick Wakeman cut his teeth as a London session musician at the tail-end of the 1960s before earning star status as a member of prog rock superstars Yes in 1971. He left the band in 1973 to concentrate on his burgeoning solo career and within a few years had released a trio of ambitious, classical rock albums that proved highly successful: The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Wakeman briefly rejoined Yes in the late '70s, and during the next decade produced the film score for Ken Russell's Lisztomania; he also co-wrote a musical version of George Orwell's 1984 with lyricist Tim Rice. He subsequently recorded a series of acclaimed new age albums, recorded and toured intermittently with Yes, and maintained a prodigious recording and touring schedule, balancing his rock, new age, religious, and solo piano work. In the 21st century, albums like 2000's Preludes to a Century and 2017's Piano Portraits earned Wakeman critical acclaim and even a return to chart success, especially on his prog-heavy 2020 outing The Red Planet.

David Bowie One of the greatest stars of the rock & roll era, David Bowie evaded easy categorization throughout his career, operating as the artiest rocker within the mainstream and the most accessible musician on the fringe. Bowie may have trafficked in ideas cultivated in the underground, but he was never quite an outsider as far as rock & roll was concerned. From the outset of his career in the 1960s, he attempted to break into the Top 40, playing British blues, mod rock & roll, and ornate pop before finally hitting paydirt as a hippie singer/songwriter. "Space Oddity" gave Bowie his breakthrough in the U.K., reaching the Top Ten in the summer of 1969 – the summer of Apollo 11 – and it belatedly performed a similar feat in America, giving him his first Top 20 hit early in 1973. By that point, Bowie had traded his folkie persona for the glam-rock alien Ziggy Stardust, one of the many shifts of sound and image that came to define his career.

Heinrich August Marschner was a master of German Romantic music, and this third volume in the series presents excerpts from some of his later operas. These include Das Schloss am Aetna with its dark Faustian themes, and Lukretia in which the composer generates an air of Classical antiquity. Both Sangeskönig Hiarne and Der Bäbu showcase Marschner’s talent with descriptive ballet music, allowing us to discover a completely new side to his musical craft.

Even without playing the title track, Akron captures one of Bruce's purest performances on The Ghost Of Tom Joad tour. The music of Alan Hovhaness, one of America’s most prolific composers, enchants with his signature synthesis of East and West. Influenced by his Armenian heritage and a fascination with nature and spirituality Hovhaness sought to create music “for all people, music which is beautiful and healing.” This collection of works featuring the violin includes several premiere recordings. Concerto No. 2, one of a series of ten concertos for various instruments, requires the soloist and ensemble to play using distinctive effects including tone clusters, melisma, and playing without strict measure. Evocations of Armenian liturgy contrasted with dizzying Scottish jigs can be heard in the Violin Sonata.

Gaetano Donizetti was one of the most distinguished Italian composers of the first half of the 19th century. At that time, opera was the preeminent musical genre in Italy, and many top composers based their careers on it. Unlike his contemporary Italian opera composers, though, Gaetano Donizetti also devoted his art to chamber music, producing a good number of excellent works. Between 1814 and 1821, he wrote a number of interesting compositions that included both obligato clarinet or two clarinets in C, as well as demanding parts for basset horn. The voices of soprano and tenor are involved, even in a duet (Aria De Torrente). This album is indebted to Nico Bertelli for his research and publications concerning classical and early romantic arias with clarinet, and to Italian researcher Adriano Amore.
